I had a person who ended up at the beginning of the year. I had a lot of people, but I don’t single them all out. I singled her out.

Because she had a wonderful work. She was one of those people who inspires me. Who gave me not new music, but a new favorite director – Wong Kar-wai. We only reconnected with her once. And I didn’t see the point in doing it a second time, or a third time. Why?

Because she didn’t understand me.

It’s amazing how much you can be on the same wavelength with a person in one plane, and in another she writes to you, as if about some third person, “I don’t understand why you need to brag about this. Showing it to people… I have nothing against it when a person does it for themselves, but why for show”. Two out of two times our communication ended precisely at this moment – the understanding that a person will never accept you completely. She perceives you not even 1/3 (the first), but simply as someone who can give her love and warmth, but in relation to whom she cannot simply give her acceptance, that people are “..and such”.

I may be different, I look different, but I always remain myself. I am me. The one you talked to yesterday, the one who helped you with your chores yesterday, repaired your equipment, shared poems, cleaned your chimney, showed you an incredible sunset. Being different, I remain myself. In different guises. Maria Tchaikovsky came to mind.

The person left behind a list of wonderful films, including the works of the wonderful Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai. I recommend watching his “In the Mood for Love”. And he also left behind the understanding that a person can be “okay” with free relationships, threesomes, same-sex love, and other similar experiments. You accept all this because you love a person for who they are. You accept any of their sides and worldview, except violence (they didn’t have this in them, but this is something that you can’t accept in others in relation to anyone). And they don’t give you the opportunity to be yourself.

Adult life is not always about mutual understanding between two people aged +-40.

Watched The Hole (2001)

This movie reminded me of my childhood – a time when they knew how to make scary movies. What is it about?

The Pit is a pretty classic story in which four classmates decide to leave the trip and…disappear. At the same time, according to the previous story, the parents will think that the children are at school, and the school will think that the children are at home. Meanwhile, the company itself planned to have fun in a room that resembles a bunker. As you can imagine, we are waiting for a “so-so” twist with the fact that the bunker door will remain closed forever. What really happened will be told to us by a surviving girl named Liz, played by Thora Birch.

Despite the fact that the film is only 1 hour and 44 minutes long, the story itself is told from several points of view – Liz, as a girl who escaped, and Martin (Daniel Brocklebank) – a guy who imprisoned the campaign in a pit. And as the plot develops, the story of each of them receives new development and a new perspective on what events took place over the course of 15 days.

The cast of the film is quite good, in addition to Tora Birch, it also starred a then-young Keira Knightley (Liz’s friend, Frankie). At the same time, it received mixed reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (only 53% positive reviews). What went wrong?

Let’s start with the fact that this is a psychological thriller – a genre in which you can find a lot of inaccuracies. Perhaps this was the reason why it had such a low rating. Otherwise, the picture from the first frame to the last moment keeps you in suspense, not giving a clear answer to what exactly happened and who is to blame for it. And in my opinion, the films of that era (the beginning of the 00s) are some of the best in this genre. They did not have some kind of contrivedness, which modern films often sin with. That is, now we will more often come across a thriller about how the heroes are hunted by some super-computer or they “steal” from modern technologies than an ordinary story about a strong, albeit somewhat painful love.

Sometimes you want such a… dirty movie that will drag you headlong. Not least to distract you from all the modern nonsense that comes out almost every day. And “The Hole” is exactly such a movie. My personal rating is 8 out of 10. Interesting story, interesting twists, good actors. The movie, by the way, is based on the book “After the Hole” by the English writer Guy Burt.

Watched Gangs of New York (2002)

It’s strange to watch a movie that’s almost as old as you are. You immediately replay in your head how old you were then, what you had in your life, what events happened at that time. In about the same way, you watch a movie and try to understand exactly how and what people lived in those times.

The issue of migration is always controversial, especially among indigenous people. All this leads to wars and the distribution of power in different territories. This is what Martin Scorsese’s film Gangs of New York is about. I don’t want to retell the plot and mention the characters, let’s just go through the feelings. This is the same film that the two of us have not watched yet, so it was all the more interesting to find out what exactly caused such delight in people that the film received so many awards.

In most cases, the list of actors’ names can tell you what kind of movie you’re going to watch. And if you pay attention to who was in the movie – we can safely say that the movie simply could not fail, at least with a lot of famous names. But what is hidden behind them?

The story is quite familiar, when a child’s father is killed and she plans to take revenge. This is not the first and not the last time that from the beginning of the film you understand how it will end. But the plot unfolds, and it begins to seem to you that everything will not be as it seemed. You even make theories about who will be “the one” who will turn history in their favor and write it. But…

Something starts to go wrong around the second half of the film. When the cards are open, you understand who is who and what his goals are, but, more importantly, the characters know the same thing. And here you are faced with stupidity that is impossible to forgive. Why? Well… because. Half the film shows us a character who lives by principles. He talks about how he “never killed honest people, except…” – but… At another moment, he begins to sharply hate the person whom a few minutes ago he praised and exalted to heaven. And you have a certain dissonance – how is that? What is the character’s worldview based on, if at one moment he says and does one thing, and at another it changes so much that it becomes difficult for you to understand “what was that?” – the first half of the film.

The main three actors (although half of the list is famous names) played the first half of the film wonderfully, and… surprisingly the second. There are certain elements of romance that are not revealed. There are certain elements of friendship that are destroyed. And in general, if you think about it, the whole film is about everyone being shit. Some are just because they were born that way, and others – because they think it’s easier to live in this world that way.

The film was interesting to watch for almost three hours. But there are few reasons why I could recommend it. It is no worse than similar films, but is it better?..
