It has become a classic to write reviews of François Ozon’s films. Should we be surprised by this?..

8 Women is a story that we are used to seeing in films based on the works of Agatha Christie. A house in which about 10 people gathered. One murder. Everyone who was in the house at that time is suspected. Add Daniel Craig and we get “Knives and Blades”, with the exception that “Knives” will be released only 17 years later. However, this is not a classic reinterpretation of the original source, because first of all we are talking about a film by François Ozon.

In this film, the story is diluted with two things – comprehensive humor and musical interludes. Because of this, I did not immediately understand what kind of interesting genre this film is – musical, comedy, detective. But this is precisely the highlight of the story, in which all the main characters are women. Each woman is in her place, each has her own story and her own secrets, which are revealed as the plot develops. The film also contains same-sex relationships, so for people who are triggered by this – I would not advise watching it. As for normal people – the film will be cute. The only real minus I would call the running time, because almost two hours is a bit long for a film that does not have any obvious dynamics.

At the same time, it would be appropriate to say that the ending of the film is quite unusual and unexpected, so it is worth watching it at least for that. I would give the film a 7.5 out of 10. It may not be Ozon’s best film, but it sets a good tone and you really wonder who the killer of the only man is.
