It’s strange to watch a movie that you couldn’t have seen as a child because…you were only 5 years old?..But now you’re older than the characters in the movie and how is it perceived now?
Before Dawn is a romantic story that begins with two strangers, Jesse (played by Ethan Hawke) and Celine (played by Julie Delpy), finding themselves on the same train. Each on their own journey, but once their paths cross, they realize they see each other as more than just fellow travelers, and decide to spend the day together.
The further they get to know each other, the more they find both disagreements and compromises about certain things. Not least of all this is due to the fact that their lives took place in two parallel universes – Jesse is from America, while Celine was born in France. And throughout the film you see a certain difference in mentality, a different attitude to the moments that surround them throughout their walk. Not least of all, the difference in perception is also due to the fact that Celine is from a more wealthy family, in which she was born and raised in love, while Jesse’s father did not really want him to be born. So we can say that they are completely different people and, probably, outside of this situation, they would hardly have found a common language, but, also, this is the reason why they cannot tear themselves away from each other.
The film does not have any “action” and is rather a calm story about two strangers who lay out their cards on the table, watching the reaction of the other. At the same time, it is interesting to contemplate how, seemingly, different worlds find some common things that unite them. The film has a lot of reflections on various things, which for some reason reminded me of Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac. The very idea of relationships for some reason echoed one of the episodes of the TV series “Soulmates”.
Is this movie worth watching? Well…it doesn’t have jokes like in light French comedies or any deep storyline, but sometimes we are interested in watching a story about two people who are, as I like to call them, “perfect strangers”. That is, people who met by chance and this “chance” seems not to be a coincidence in itself, as evidenced by their immersion in each other. In a way, I felt that some…um. I would say that the movie has a certain unfinished nature. And this is not surprising, because nine years after the release of the original movie, a sequel was released (Before Sunset), and nine years after that, a third movie was released (Before Midnight). However, this is understandable when you watch the movie now, but the movie itself did not have an ending as such.
I would recommend it for viewing if you just want an interesting romantic, light story for one evening 🙂
